Habito Tech Zero commitments

The fight against climate change is on and we're committed to having a positive impact.

At Habito, we’re committing to reach net zero emissions by 2030. This means limiting our company’s carbon footprint in line with keeping global warming to below 1.5°C - the critical level of heating to avoid the worst impacts of the climate crisis

The commitments we’re making

As part of our net zero commitment, we will:

  • Measure all our emissions, including scope 3, and report them publicly each year.
  • Publish more details about how we plan to reach net zero by the end of 2021 (or within a year of joining Tech Zero). This will include setting a net zero target date by 2050 at the latest, along with any interim targets. We'll aim to halve emissions by 2030 across all scopes.
  • Become a carbon neutral business.
  • Assign our Chief Impact Officer to be responsible and accountable for our net zero target.
  • Communicate our climate commitments in other meaningful ways, including to our customers.
  • Report progress on short and medium term targets to our board annually, and on their website.

We’ve made a start

Last year, Habito became a certified B Corp. Put simply, it means we’ve made a legal promise to value people and the planet as much as profit.

We’re also a supporter of the Better Business Act. The Better Business Act is a collection of over 350 businesses backing policy change together. The aim is to make sure that every company in the UK must consider wider society and the environment as much as their shareholders’ interests.

Targeting net zero as a business is a major part of our commitment. Businesses measure their greenhouse gas emissions by sorting them into three groups or ‘scopes’ - find out exactly what this means here. We measured our scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions for 2020 (133 tonnes of CO2e, if you’re interested). We’re working on offsetting any we can’t eliminate right now but ultimately towards stamping out our emissions altogether.  We’ll measure our emissions each year and share our progress against our net zero target for 2030.

As well as our own net zero goal, we are conscious of the bigger picture. Here’s how we’re supporting the UK’s target of net zero by 2050:

  1. Habito is a founding member of the Tech Zero taskforce: 15 of the most innovative tech companies in the UK. We’re working together to tackle the climate crisis and make the UK the top global destination for green investment
  1. We’re working on a project we’re calling sustainable home improvement. The residential sector makes up 19% of the nation’s carbon emissions and we’re in a position to help drive this figure down. Nearly 40% of homes in England were built before World War 2 and older homes are more likely to be inefficient. Reducing residential emissions is no simple task but we’re dedicated to educating and encouraging homeowners to make positive changes.

We know that by working closely with like minded businesses and organisations, we can have a positive impact on the fight against climate change.
